U.K. Retailer GAME Denies Hack Report - UPDATED
U.K. videogame retailer Game denies reports that email addresses and unprotected passwords were uncomprehensible to hackers.
UPDATE: With brilliant timing, Spirited says the reports of the nag are a big fat lie.
"We have thoroughly investigated the hacking claims made today aside the website Pastebin, and can confirm that they are entirely incorrect. The published email addresses are non enrolled users of Gage.atomic number 27.Great Britain, and there has been no infract of our database security department," Gage rep Anna-Marie Mason said in a statement. "We would like to assure whol our customers that their details are well protected, and advise anyone who has any questions to contact our customer services team via the site, our Facebook page operating theater Twitter describe."
The newfangled story:
The hack, it would come out, is back, and piece specifics are a bit thin at this point, the relevant bit is pretty peltate: if you have an account at Game.cobalt.uk, you need to get on with it and convert your password, corresponding, in real time. Hackers recently hit the site thanks to a "shell injection vulnerability" that allowed them to accession the Game user database and get their men on email addresses and passwords in bare, unprotected text. Whether or not whatsoever charge plate information was lost is unknown.
Why was Game storing user information in an unencrypted initialize? That is where the mystery lies, although I suspect that laziness, apathy, neglectfulness and/or unqualified incompetence probably figures into it somehow.
Another gaming site, the less-known Catalyst Gaming from Northern Tasmania, was also hacked, leading to the loss of user entropy and passwords, but as luck would have it those passwords were saved.
Game has eventually to comment along the berth but we'll permit you know what it has to say if and when a statement is forthcoming. Meanwhile, if you're a Unfit customer, get over there and make the switch, earlier someone other does it for you.
